English-speaking driving schools in Berlin: the full list by district

Daniel Haag · Updated 2026-10-21 · 8 min read
49 driving school locations in Berlin say on their websites that they teach in English (Fahrwahl data, October 2026). Most are in Mitte (13), Tempelhof-Schöneberg (7) and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (6). Their typical price for a 45-minute lesson is €56.25, exactly the Berlin median, so you do not pay extra for English. The theory test can be taken in English at TÜV and DEKRA.

How we built this list

Fahrwahl keeps a database of 468 driving schools in Berlin. For each school we check the website and note which languages the school says it teaches in. As of October 2026, 49 school locations list English. Some are branches of the same school (for example AS-Fahrschule, Performance, 2Drive, Dreams, TAS and Mo's Fahrschule), so you can often switch to another branch closer to home.

Prices below are for class B (car), as published by the school. A lesson always means 45 minutes. "Registration" is the one-time Grundbetrag, "test fee" is what the school charges for presenting you at the practical test (on top of the TÜV/DEKRA fee). Where we found no price list, ask the school for a written offer.

"Teaches in English" can mean very different things: an instructor who explains everything in English during driving lessons, English theory classes, or just an office that answers emails in English. Always ask which parts are in English before you sign.

How driving lessons in English work

Theory classes and the theory test in English

The theory test is offered by TÜV and DEKRA in 13 languages, including English. You choose the language when you book. The questions are official translations, so you study with an app that uses the same English questions. Details in our theory test in English guide.

Theory classes are a different story. If you learn from zero, German law requires at least 12 double lessons of general theory plus class-specific lessons at a driving school. At many schools, these classes are in German, even if driving lessons are in English. Ask the school:

34 schools in our database offer online theory classes. If you convert a foreign licence, theory classes are not mandatory at all.

What about the practical test?

The practical test is officially held in German, by an examiner from TÜV Rheinland or DEKRA, with your driving instructor in the car. Many examiners in Berlin are used to international candidates, but there is no guarantee that your examiner will give directions in English. Your school knows the examiners and the practice at your test centre, so ask them early how they handle it. Learning the basic German direction words (see above) is the safest plan either way.

The test takes about 55 minutes for class B, including preparation and the debrief.

Tips for choosing an English-speaking school

  1. Location first. Lessons usually start at the school or near your home. A school 45 minutes away costs you time on every lesson. Check the district pages, for example Mitte or Tempelhof-Schöneberg.
  2. Ask for a named instructor who speaks English well, and whether you can keep the same instructor.
  3. Compare total price, not just the lesson price. Ask for registration fee, learning material, special drive price and test presentation fee in writing.
  4. Automatic or manual? 40 of the 49 locations list automatic (B_AUTO in our data). If you learn only on automatic, you get an automatic-only licence unless you do code 197 training.
  5. Test dates. Ask how long students usually wait for a practical test date.
  6. Sign up through FahrwahlIt is free, we send you the contract and help you start.
